Last weekend all the rushes for Mortus illumina (36 tapes) were packed up in a flight case, loaded into the 5YLACMobile and taken along the M62, then along the M6 to Junction 20 and Lymm Services.

In the car park, headlights were flashed, horns were beeped and the rendezvous was made and they were then loaded into another vehicle to take them off to Chester so the work on the sound can begin.

So next time you are at Lymms services, just remember that a little bit of majgic took place there

Dirty Filthy Gun of a Guitar

Remember what happened when we bought a cowbell ? We went onto record “I shot a Frenchman at Agincourt” which sold on close to 200 copies and the music video had over 6000 hits. Well, now we have gone and got us a dirty filthy gun of a guitar.

One of the other aims of our in-house band Chance & The Lucky Aces is to use it as a vehicle for pursuing music video concepts. So, does the purchase of this guitar indicate an upcoming music video ? Or is it just a clever ruse ….

One of The Locations for Surprise

Back in January we exclusively revealed that our upcoming film would feature a light switch . We can now also confirm, that one of the locations is a Kitchen. Is the light switch going to be in the Kitchen scene? Well, that would be giving Just too much away now wouldn’t it.

Bettakultcha

On Tuesday 8th of June 2011, 5YLAC Films attempted to premiere their film Killing Amy at Bettakultcha IX. Due to technical difficulties, the film started playing once, then stopped and then played very choppily for about three minutes, before having to be abandoned.

What was seen on the film provoked quite a strong reaction. While the film had been designed to be unsettling, shocking and provoke debate, it was not our intention to cause offence. There has been some very interesting and very balanced debate about not just the screening, but on censorship and trigger warnings afterwards on the following blogs:

We totally agree that showing the film without a warning was a mistake. We are also sorry that it has overshadowed the other speakers who spoke that night. As an organisation that believes in getting behind people and other groups, this was never our intention.

We have been asked about the context of the film. At this stage we do not want to speak too much about the film itself, as it is about to begin the festival loop and as part of that process naturally more information will appear on this site, including a very special guest blogger who will be giving their views on the main protagonist.

Once the film has had its run on the festival circuit, it will be made available for viewing on this site, with appropriate warnings about the context in place.

Well, not quite, but thanks to the miracle of Skype, a projector and the organisation of Ian Barrans & Michael Andrew Wood, Oscar nominated Director Mark Osbourne (Kung Fu Panda) answered questions from filmmakers in Leeds at the Waterfront Bar, as part of the monthly West Yorkshire Independent Film Network (WYIFN) event.

Shoot Protocol

Back in February 2010 Robert St-John Smith, founder of 5YLAC films, did a talk

at the very first Bettakultcha, entitled “How not to make a film ” based on the experiences of Mortus illumina (which is still stuck in  post production hell). On June 7th, he will be giving a presentation entitled “How to make a film” based on the recently completed short, Killing Amy, which was inspired by the Bettakultcha event.
